Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu has been serving Hawaii's children since 1963.

The brainchild of Honolulu Judge Gerald R. Corbett, several of Hawaii's community leaders, including George Schnak, the late Henry Damon and the late Ernest Kai met in Judge Corbett's chambers with a common concern, the direction in which many of Hawaii's youth were headed. Corbett, a Juvenile Court Judge saw first-hand that one-half of the boys who stepped into his courtroom came from broken homes. The meeting of this civic-minded group led to the forming of an organization where men could volunteer their time with "fatherless" boys and provide a positive male role model through individualized friendship and ideally turn this trend around. In March of 1963, the Big Brothers program was officially incorporated.

In 1972, Hawaii Big Sisters was founded to work with girls from single-parent homes. Five years later, in 1979, Big Brothers of Hawaii and Hawaii Big Sisters merged their programs, becoming Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu, Inc., unifying to serve the needs of all children from single-parent families.

"Our vision is to inspire children to fulfill their dreams from one generation to the next."
