BBBSH EVENTS:

LAST CALL:

· Prudential Movie Day  - Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, Saturday, July 2nd, 8am Registration at the Ward Theatres. A handful of tickets are still available. At 8:30am, Prudential will have a brief program to announce essay winners and parade the contestants for the costume contest with the movie to follow shortly thereafter. Just a reminder that essay entries need to be in the BBBS office by next Monday, June 27th to be judged beforehand while costumes will be judged the day of the event. This is the absolute last call for the movie RSVPs. Contact your Case Manager if you have questions.

UPCOMING BBBS EVENTS:

· BIGs’ Night Karaoke: Thurs., July 7TH, 6-8pm at Nocturna Lounge. Nocturna Lounge is Hawaii's first NextGen Lounge, providing stylish, state-of-the-art karaoke experience with full bar and unique selection of specialty cocktails (Happy Hour 4-7pm). Ample parking at Waterfront Plaza (formerly Restaurant Row). Food provided by BBBSH. No pressure to sing, but you can join in cheering on other Bigs or Case Managers! Great chance to meet and have a great time with other BIGs. Please RSVP to Christine Fujino by June 30th: cfujino@bigshonolulu.org.

· BBBSH Bowl For Kids’ Sake, Aug. 6,7 & 13, at Aiea Bowl. Plan on joining us for this annual and only major fundraising event to raise money for our BBBSH program. Go to www.bfkshonolulu.org for more information.

· Reading & Arts Festival, Aug. 20th, Kualoa Ranch. Proceeds of the event to benefit the creation of the Kualoa Ranch Big Brothers Big Sisters Scholarship Fund to help a Little headed to college. There will be game booths, educational displays, art activities, food booths, craft booths, Keiki story book reading & author activities, kid’s talent contest, costume characters, youth theatre, and more. Admission will be $3 per person or $10 for a family of 4, but plans are in the works for BBBS Ohana to enter for Free. As a token of our appreciation, BBBSH will be offering free shaved ice and face painting booths. We are looking for volunteers to help man the booths so keep the date in mind to help or at least attend.

· Breakfast with Santa, December date TBD, Kualoa Ranch. More info to come, but event proceeds will be added to the Kualoa Ranch Scholarship for a Little.


MISCELLANEOUS:

· July 1st: visit Downtown art galleries, bistros, boutiques and more during First Friday festivities from 5-9 p.m. For a less-hectic alternative, go on the third Fridays for Slow Art Fridays from 6-9:30 p.m. Check www.firstfridayhawaii.com for more information.

· July 4th: 20th Anniversary of the Ala Moana Fireworks Spectacular

· July 15-17: BayFest 2011 at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Station featuring concerts, entertainment, Greenfest Expo, military displays, carnival rides and fireworks.  BayFest Hotline at 808-254-7679

· The Low-Income Home Energy Assistant Program (LIHEAP) is currently accepting applications this month through June 30th. LIHEAP assists households with their utility bill (electric or gas) via (1) a restoration of power program that has been terminated or  (2) the Energy Credit program where up to $200 can be credited to your account if you qualify.  For more information and to apply, contact your nearest Honolulu Community Action Program (HCAP) office:  Central: 488-6834;  Kalihi/Palama: 847-0804;  Leahi: 732-7755; Leeward: 696-4261;  Windward: 239-5754.
 
· Every Wed. evening from now thru Aug. 10th, the Honolulu Zoo presents their annual Wildest Show Summer Concert Series featuring some of Hawaii’s top entertainers.  Gates open at 4:35pm with the concert from 6-7pm.  Admission $3 with proceeds benefitting conservation education.  Bring your dinner and listen to some cool sounds.

WEEKEND HAPPENINGS:

Friday, June 24th

· Eat the Street: Pig Out! 4-9pm: South Street parking lot;  555 South St.   This super fun and tasty event will have the theme of “Pig Out” this month- so every vendor will also offer special pork dishes.

· Come to the Paradise Bay Resort Kanikapila, 47-039 Lihikai Drive Kaneohe, 6-11pm,  BYOU: Bring Your Own Ukulele.  For an all-ages night of music, food and fun on the shores of Kaneohe Bay featuring live jams, open  mike and a talent contest to crown the Island’s best musician. Free 239-5711.

· Kakaako Makai Community Cultural Marketplace Local performers, history, culture, crafters, artisans, farmers, fish and food come together on the Waterfront Park in a community village for the entire family. Kakaako Waterfront Park, corner of Ilalo and Ahui St.: Fri., 6/24 (4:30--8pm); Sat., 6/25 (9am--4pm) Free.

· Bon Dance: Obon or just Bon is a Japanese custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors.  The "Bon season" is an important part of the present-day culture and life of Hawaii. Bon Odori (Dance) festivals are also celebrated in many temples each week during the summer season and concurrently hold a cultural and food bazaar providing a variety of cuisine and art, often there are games and prizes for children, and performances of taiko by both amateur and professional groups have recently become a popular feature of Bon Odori festivals.   It’s fun.  The elder Japanese ladies are always willing to teach newcomers to dance if you’re willing to try.

· While at the Windward Mall, check out the Honolulu Broadway Babies Traveling Road Show: Windward Mall Center Court @ 6pm.   The Honolulu Broadway Babies debut as they hit the road to promote their upcoming summer performances. Enjoy various Broadway hits and classics performed by Hawaii’s up-and-coming young theatre talent

· Behind the Birds:  go behind the scenes of the Honolulu Zoo’s bird exhibit in this fun-filled outdoor tour. Limit to 12 people, 528-1432.  $4.

Sunday, June 26th

· Bluegrass Hawaii jam session,  St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1679 California Ave., Wahiawa, 2-6 pm.  Free and open to the public.  Acoustic stringed instrument musicians of all levels and "toe-tappers" welcome.

· Family Fishing at Ho`omaluhia Botanical Garden Come with your family to fish and enjoy the outdoors at Ho`omaluhia Botanical Garden.  This catch and release program  is fun for everyone. · Coconut Leaf-Weaving (Ulana Lau Niu) Demonstrations: 3 to 6 p.m. Sundays at Royal Hawaiian Center, Royal Grove.

· Free Ukelele Lessons: 5 to 7:15 p.m. third Thursday of the month at Windward Mall Center Court. For all ages and skill levels sponsored by 'Ukulele Club of Hawaii; features instruction by a different local artist each month. Bring your own instrument or borrow one. Call 234-2868.

· Legacy Tree Program: This environmental program aims to replenish Hawai’i’s lush environment while fostering the growth of Hawai’i’s children and youth. For each Legacy Tree that is sponsored, $20 will be allocated towards Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs. Please help us spread the word!
